The Free Captains League, the Grimwake Salvage Union and the Rustborn hold that a derelict belongs to whoever brings it back to life. They honour each other's salvage claims, answer each other's distress calls, and stand together against any power that would own their ships or their yards.
Charter
The Free Captains League holds that a ship belongs to the people who keep it alive.
The Grimwake Salvage Union built Grimwake Yard from the Morrow's Wake and pieces of at least seventeen other spacecraft.
The Rustborn survived nearly ninety years aboard the Stalwart, a ship the models said should not have lasted half that long.
Others call us smugglers, pirates with cutting torches, and grease on the deck plates.
The great powers hire us and would rule us.
We answer to our crews.
What is drifting dead belongs to whoever brings it back to life.
We honour each other's claims.
We answer each other's distress calls.
Common Ground
- A ship belongs to its crew. No owner, office or flag outranks the people who keep a vessel breathing.
- Life before salvage. The living are recovered first. Property waits.
- Repair over replace. A machine that can be made to run again is never waste.
- No masters. We work beside people. We do not take orders from those who will not.
- Clear contracts. An honest bargain, written plainly, is kept.
Common Goals
- Salvage law across Epsilon. Win a system-wide definition of abandonment and lawful recovery.
- Find the missing. The lost Far Horizon ships, the yardship Carrion Bell, the Stalwart's sister transports and the remaining Exodus wrecks.
- Open lanes. Expand the Wayline Network, keep neutral ports, and let no single power hold fuel, docking or shipping.
- Free yards. Crossroads, Grimwake Yard and the Yard stay in the hands of the crews who built them.
- Machines we can fix. Break technological lockouts and trade in equipment any crew can repair.
Articles
- No member raises arms against another.
- An attack on one member is an attack on all.
- Claims. A claim stands when it is written and logged with the Claim Library before cargo moves. An unwritten debt makes no claim. The crew that brings a derelict back to life holds it, and no member cuts into another member's logged claim.
- Distress. Every member answers another's distress call. A rescue between members is never billed. Salvage recovered afterward is settled by Article 3.
- Disputes. A contested claim goes to a temporary arbitration panel of one captain from each member. The panel rules and dissolves. The Commons keeps no permanent office, levies no tax and commands no fleet.
- Docks. Member vessels may fuel, repair, trade and hire crew at Crossroads, Grimwake Yard and the Yard. Each dock keeps its own house rules. A captain's hold is the captain's business, but a captain who brings trouble to a member's dock answers for it there.
- Open work. Members share technical documentation with one another and sell no member a machine locked against its repair.
